As our name suggests, here at HQHair, we know a thing or two about good haircare. And we especially love it when a company bursts on to the scene that is innovative and does things a little differently. With that in mind, we caught up with one of the experts at Concoction (who has amazing hair herself!), who answered a few of your burning questions!
1. Just over a year ago I shaved my hair off for charity and it’s not been the same since. What can I do to bring the life back to it?
Healthy hair comes from within, so make sure you eat plenty of protein and get the right combination of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A and E are also important for shiny, healthy hair, and treating it once in a while with natural oils such as Argan or Macadamia will help to replace any lost moisture and restore shine. You might also want to avoid dyeing your hair for a little while and ensure you condition it regularly when shampooing.
If hair is dry and frizzy, use a moisturising shampoo and rinse with cool water rather than hot.
2. I dye my hair blonde quite regularly but it’s so dry, where should I start to get it back to good condition?
Start to bring the life back to your hair using a premium shampoo and conditioner. For example, our ShampYou base-blends contain a complex of Silk Amino Acids. Just like the softness you get from a silk fabric, our silk extracts create a protein shield around your hair fibres, helping to nourish and repair dry, damaged fibres. This will leave you with much softer and more manageable locks. Rinse your hair with cool water after shampooing and then use an intensive conditioner like our Crème De Concoction which helps to smooth the hair cuticle. Finishing off with a hair serum or oil will help to prevent your hair from drying out.
3. How do I keep my straight hair looking super shiny?
Straight hair is naturally more shiny due to the way the cuticles reflect the light. Beware of using too many leave-in styling products as these can leave build-up over time and can dull the hair, stealing your wonderful shine. You can help avoid the build-up by washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo. Try adding a shot of our Back To Your Roots SuperSerum that will remove-build up and leave hair squeaky clean. Wash hair with cool water after shampooing, as hot water can damage the hair and reduce shine. An oil or silicone based hair finishing serum will add the perfect finishing touch – and don’t forget to drink plenty of water as this will ensure your hair is moisturised from within!
4. What is the best leave in conditioner for dry/damaged hair?
Try our Crème De Concoction; it’s a premium hair rinse with an intensive yet gentle blend of nourishing conditioning ingredients. You’ll notice it comes out of the bottle in thick, creamy white ribbons. This ‘crème’ is the perfect antidote for very dry and damaged hair
and is suitable for all hair types. You can also use it as a masque. Simply leave in for up to 10 minutes, then rinse out for the perfect finish. And to enhance your experience, you’ll love the heavenly delicate Cashmere and White Lily fragrance – it’s gorgeous!
5. I have really dry ends but greasy roots, what would you recommend to use?
With our Concoction Mixology blends, you can combine two different SuperSerum shots with a single base-blend so that your two key hair needs are catered to. For dry ends, add a shot of Gimme More Moisture SuperSerum which is like a moisture drink for dry hair with its blend of Argan Oil and Shea Butter. For the greasy roots, your second shot should be the Back To Your Roots SuperSerum as this will help to clarify your hair and scalp, reducing the greasiness with its blend of Aloe Vera and Acai fruit.
6. Any tips to keep my colour lasting longer?
There’s a few key things you need to do to get longer lasting colour. Firstly, make sure your hair is well conditioned before you have your colour done (whether at home or by your stylist). Then think about the right colour for you. Hair colours that are very different to yours won’t last as long. For example, if you’re a dark brunette and you ‘go blonde’, your roots are going to show through rather quickly. Watch out for colour fading – a number of factors can cause this. Strong sunlight, harsh chemicals and chlorine can all make your colour fade faster, so limit your exposure to the sun if at all possible! When you wash your hair, rinse with cool water instead of hot and finally, and a no brainer, use products
suited to coloured hair.
7. What is the perfect combination for dry, coloured hair?
Definitely go with one of our colour shots (Beautiful Brunette, High-Definition Blonde, Ravishing Red). For very dry hair go for a shot of the Gimme More Moisture SuperSerum which contains Argan Oil and Shea Butter. Or if you use styling irons, go for the Thermo-Straight which contains a special heat-protective active ingredient. Also it’s good to know that all the Concoction ShampYou base-blends contain a blend of Silk amino acids which are a further antidote to hair that has dried out from colouring.
8. I have very fine hair, what would you say are your top tips to add volume when styling?
For extra volume, only apply your conditioner to the ends of your hair (and not the roots) otherwise it will weigh it down. When blow drying, lift sections of the hair upwards and direct the hot air at your scalp. This helps to dry the roots, giving more lift and volume.
Avoid drying your hair with your head upside-down; this is a big no-no and you’d be better off just tilting your head! Back-combing is also a great way to achieve more volume, and there’s loads of how-to videos if you search for them online!
9. What are your top tips to keep your hair healthy when it’s hot?
Drink plenty of water in the summer to keep your hair hydrated from within. Good nutrition means your hair will be healthy from the roots. Also, limit your exposure to the sun and be aware that lots of swimming in pools with chlorine (or the salty sea) can leave your hair unruly and in need of some major TLC. Regular conditioning will keep hair soft and manageable. The odd touch of hair serum or oil will also help to manage the frizz!
10. If you could only choose one combination from the Concoction range to use for the rest of your life, what would you pick?
I’d definitely go for the Bakhour base-blend. Bakhour is a traditional sweet scent popular in some of the middle eastern countries and it’s such an unusual and addictive fragrance! It’s created from a precious combination of oils, aromatic spices and fruits and leaves your hair with a delicate scent that mingles florals and a touch of sweetness. I’m also a big fan of the colour shots (I’m using High-Definition Blonde at the moment). And Turn Up The Volume is a must-have with its potent and effective blend of body-building wheat amino acids.
