Top Highlighter Hacks

Cream highlighter Base

Similar to how your foundation looks better when applied over a primer, highlighter looks best on a base. Starting with a cream highlighter will give your powder pigment something to stick to. As you build onto it, you’ll be able to create a better shimmer which also lasts longer. We recommend the benefit Watt’s Up! Highlighter as its sheer champagne shade compliments any colour applied over the top.

Reduce Tiredness

If you’re super-tired, sometimes concealer isn’t enough to cover those dark circles. Give your skin an extra boost by mixing your concealer with a liquid highlighter. The NYX Professional Makeup Born to Glow! Liquid Illuminator in shade Sunbeam is a great option as its lightweight formula will give you a dewy, lit-from-within look.

Build On Blusher

Most people tend to either choose a highlighter or a blusher, but you should use both! By applying highlighter over the top of your blusher it creates the illusion of glowing skin, rather than just a product sat on top of the skin. One of our favourites to apply over blush is the Illamasqua Beyond Powder in Daze as it has an ethereal, iridescent finish.

Combined Shades

By combining two similar shades of highlighter, it will leave you with a warmer, softer look. The Chantecaille Les Paillettes Highlighter is a limited edition creation which is infused with micro-pearl pigments and combines rose-gold with a sheer pink hue. Its buildable formula allows you to either get a strobe finish or a subtle radiance with ease.

Incorporate Colour

We’re totally on board with the rainbow highlighter trend here at HQhair! Perfect for a festival, night out, or anyone who loves playing with makeup, it leaves a multi-coloured pastel shimmer on your cheekbones. Our personal favourite is the Ciaté London Mermaid Glow Highlighter as it contains refined pearl pigments for flattering coverage.

Use Setting Spray

The best way to get the most out of your highlighter is to use a wet brush. Spritz the brush with a setting spray before use and it will help to pick up more product for a more pigmented finish. It will also help it to last longer once applied! You can even dust some dry powder highlighter over the top too for extra shimmer.
