Graduation season is fast approaching, and now that you’ve conquered all those brain-busting exams it’s time for a new challenge – what to wear for the ceremony? As if it wasn’t hard enough to pick an outfit, you also want to have makeup that will look flawless in the thousands of photographs being taken on the day – and believe me there will be thousands! So read on for the HQHair guide to graduation makeup, and find out what products you need to stay looking fresh, radiant and bright (in every way) ready for that photo that will sit on the mantelpiece for years to come.
As you’ve probably heard thousands of times at school, “fail to prepare and prepare to fail”, and this is perfectly true for makeup, as well as your exams! A good primer is essential for helping your makeup apply more easily and making it last all day. The award-winning NARS Pore Refining Primer (£26.00) is oil-free and designed to minimize shine and mattify skin, perfect for a long day in a hall with hundreds of people.
The next step is finding the right foundation. If you’ve been spending far too many late nights in the library (or the student bar!), then the Wake Me Up Foundation (£8.99) from Rimmel is ideal. It’s ‘anti-fatigue effect’ instantly refreshes the skin, giving you a healthy radiant glow, whilst the moisturising formula helps to re-hydrate your tired skin. On the other hand, if you’re after a little more coverage, then why not try the Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin 24HR Makeup (£24.25). Perfect for those with normal, combination or oily complexions; the ‘time release technology’ helps to control excess oil and shield the skin from environmental factors like heat and humidity, and with its soft matte finish, your skin will look perfectly flawless in the photographs!
Though it might be tempting to go for a summery neon eyeliner to stand out from the crowd, for a graduation makeup look it’s best to keep it simple and nothing beats a classic smokey eye. Try the Bourjois Smoky Stories Palette (£6.83) in Upside Brown, for a more subtle, nude-toned twist on the traditional dark shades. This eyeshadow quad contains all the shades you need to create a sophisticated, timeless eye makeup look, and the simple step-by-step guide makes it super easy. If you’re worried that your eyelids might get oily, or perhaps you might shed a few tears after the ceremony, then make sure you apply a primer like the NARS Pro Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (£19.50) to ensure your fabulous eye makeup stays in place all day.
If statement red lips are your signature then go for a blue-toned shade that will whiten and brighten your teeth like Scarlet Red by Lipstick Queen (£22.00). Otherwise we’d recommend the Rimmel Provocalips Transfer-Proof Lipsticks (£6.99). They’re available in various shades to match your graduation outfit, but our favourite is ‘Make Your Move’ – a pretty pink-toned nude colour that will suit just about everyone. The best thing about these lipsticks is once you’ve applied the ‘topcoat’ the colour is locked in for a massive 16hours, and won’t budge no matter how many glasses of champagne you drink! You’ll be able to smile for photos all day long, knowing that your lipstick is still looking fabulous.
Last but not least, don’t forget to pack a translucent powder with you. We love the Youngblood Hi-Definition Powder (£32.00) with its built in mirror and luxurious flocked sponge applicator, it will keep your makeup looking fresh and flawless and the added menthol provides a lovely cooling effect to keep you calm and collected on your big day.
