We’ve Been Washing Our Hair Wrong Our Entire Lives

Shampoo. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. Condition. Easy, right? Wrong. It turns out, washing our hair isn’t the simple task we all thought it was. According to leading haircare brand Kerastase, we all should be conditioning before shampooing. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, it’s a pretty easy trick to achieving a killer mane. Here’s all you need to know…

Speaking to Refinery29Nina Dimachki, artistic director at Kerastase said:

Conditioning before you shampoo is great for adding nourishment to fine hair without weighing it down.

It also promotes a longer lasting blow-dry and primes hair before cleansing, allowing shampoo to distribute easier and more evenly. Who knew?!

Expertly formulated to strengthen hair and repair strand structure, the Kérastase’s Résistance Thérapiste collection uses keratin-associated proteins along with resurrection sap from the resurrection plants to help smooth and hydrate even the most damaged hair.

But, you don’t have to overhaul your routine to try this trick at home. Just take your normal shampoo and conditioner and reverse the order. However, if you hair is thick or coarse, you may benefit from a condition-shampoo-condition regimen, says Nina.

There are however, some best practices to keep in mind if you’re going to start this regime. While we’d typically only use our conditioners from our ears down post shampoo, Nina says to saturate all your hair (from root to tip) if you’re planning on taking on the trend.

You will be cleansing it after, so your hair won’t be weighed down or oily.

If you typically lather up twice, she says to scrub the conditioner into your hair like a shampoo instead.

Extra hydration is never a bad thing, especially as we stare the cold, wintery months in the face. So, instead of trying to find a miracle formula this season, why not try changing up your roster order. It’s got to be worth a try!
